Frequently Asked Questions

What is a disciplined oscillator and how does it work?

A disciplined oscillator locks a high-stability OCXO to an external 1PPS reference (typically from GNSS/GPS). When the reference is available, the OCXO is continuously corrected; when lost, it enters holdover mode, maintaining accuracy based on its learned aging and temperature characteristics.

What is holdover and how accurate is it?

Holdover is the period when a disciplined oscillator operates without an external 1PPS reference, relying on the OCXO's intrinsic stability. KCCS disciplined OCXOs achieve <=1.5 us/24h holdover accuracy, while the micro version achieves <=5 us/24h.

What is the 1PPS alignment accuracy?

KCCS 1PPS-disciplined oscillators achieve <=50 ns alignment accuracy between the output 1PPS and the input GNSS 1PPS reference when locked. Frequency accuracy while locked is <=0.01 ppm.

Can a disciplined oscillator operate without GNSS?

During GNSS outages, the disciplined oscillator enters holdover mode, maintaining timing accuracy based on the OCXO's learned behavior. KCCS units maintain <=1.5 us/24h in holdover. For extended outages, an OCXO with higher stability grade is recommended.
