Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OCXO and how does it work?

An Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) maintains a quartz crystal at a constant elevated temperature inside a micro-oven, minimizing frequency drift caused by ambient temperature changes. This delivers stability from 0.01 ppb to 50 ppb, far exceeding TCXO performance.

What is the difference between OCXO, TCXO and VCXO?

OCXO uses an oven for temperature control (highest stability, 0.01-50 ppb, highest power). TCXO uses electronic compensation (0.1-5 ppm, low power). VCXO is voltage-tunable for PLL/frequency synthesis (wide pulling range, +/-50 to +/-200 ppm).

What phase noise performance can KCCS OCXOs achieve?

KCCS ultra-low phase noise OCXOs achieve -160 to -170 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset and -118 to -132 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset, with a phase noise floor of -175 dBc/Hz. Frequencies range from 10 to 100 MHz.

What is Allan deviation (ADEV) and why does it matter?

Allan deviation measures short-term frequency stability of an oscillator. KCCS ultra-low ADEV OCXOs achieve 1.03E-13 at 1 second and 8E-14 at 10 seconds, critical for atomic clock references, test equipment and high-performance phase-locked loops.

How long does an OCXO take to warm up?

KCCS OCXOs typically achieve rated stability within 3 minutes of power-on. Low-power variants may require up to 5 minutes. Warm-up current is higher than steady-state (e.g., 600mA startup vs 130mA steady for standard grade).

Can KCCS customize OCXO frequency and package?

Yes. KCCS offers custom frequencies from 5 MHz to 100 MHz, multiple package sizes (14x9mm DIP, 14x9mm SMD, 9.7x7.5mm SMD, 7.5x5.5mm SMD), and sine output (custom options available). Contact sales for custom specifications.
